Portrait Photography Guidelines – Upshot Of Lighting by Michelle Hurley
Whoever decided to put the flash of a camera looking straight ahead is not a Portrait Photographer. The following tips portrait photography are intended to put some perspective on the lighting.
The harshness of direct flash
The reason is not a good idea to have a flash pointed directly at the subject in portrait photography is that the intense burst of light tends to wash out any curvature or the shadow on the face and makes the subject seem to be flatter than they are. This gives an unnatural appearance.
If you are using a boot flash form, the assembly should be allowed to adjust the direction of the flash. Angle up and bounce the flash light from the ceiling. This diffuse the light and lead to a more natural and attractive appearance.
If your e-flash is not adjustable, you may have to use a physical object to diffuse the light in the same way that a screen diffuses the light from a lamp. There are many mounting diffusers on the market. If you are in a meeting and do not have a diffuser, a plastic cup semi-transparent, you can work in a pinch.
Light Box
If you have time to prepare the area to shoot the picture, you may want to bring a stand light source such as a light box. A light box is just a white box, often framed with wood, either fine paper or rice muslin stretched over it. The leaflets are not quick on the market but are fairly easy to do.
This table acts as a diffuser for a permanent or flash light / flash that can be moved to different positions to get rid of the shadows or accent while resulting in a more natural look.
Mobility
Unless you are shooting in a studio in which the object simply sit and smile after the lighting has been short listed, you must be able to move around light sources. Many startup flashes the ability to provide remote control that can be removed from the camera and kept aside. This capability is ideal for semi-open shooting Portraits.
Outdoors, the light source may be the sun. Although often need assistance, light reflectors to manipulate a great job here and soften the lighting harsh shadows from direct sunlight they often create. Once again, many of these on the market that actually use a light folding reflector is designed for automotive windshields.
